Money Woes
July 28, 2008 | Category: Family & Friends
I’m sure everyone has a little grievance when it comes to money, because I know I do. Money is a very sensitive issue, socially. We’ve heard stories about brothers killing brothers, or people kill themselves because they owe loan sharks too much money. Money, money, money. Some say money is the root of all evil. I disagree, greed is the root of all evil. Money destroys people, it destroys relationships and friendship, not to mention family ties.
Right now, I’m in a dilemma with a friend. A few months ago this friend (lets call this friend B), B asked if I could loan a bit of cash. Please note that B has his/her own business and I’m wondering why B is asking to borrow money. It was a small amount and that B will be as soon as cash arrived. Since it was small I said okay, I’m too nice sometimes. =/ Even with that, I had to drive all the way down to B (instead of the other way around) just to give the money; not that I mind but aren’t you suppose to be the one being nice because your friend borrowed you money?
Anyways, it’s been two months since it happened and I haven’t heard a word from B since. Like I said, it’s not a lot but we live in hard times nowadays so every cent counts. In fact, I messaged B a few weeks ago reminding B about returning me the money; B said, give him/her a week, B needed to clear some cheques. So I waited, ten days, not a word from B.
Day 11, I text B, asking where the hell is my money. Guess what B replies, “Sorry my dear, cheques still not cleared. I promise this Saturday okay? I’ll call you.”
By then then, I was fuming but I kept my cool and replied, “Look, I know we’re friends and I don’t like to keep ‘bugging’ my friends about anything, especially about money. I’m rather tight with it right now and honestly, I need it. Please be considerate and return me my money.”
He responded, “Please don’t be angry, I’ll give you the money this weekend.”
The text conversation was last Wednesday and today is Monday, I still haven’t gotten my money. How long does it take to clear a fucking cheque?
Honestly, I don’t appreciate being treated this way and I certainly feel used. Wouldn’t you?

on July 28th, 2008When it comes to lending to friends, I have a rule. Only lend the amount I’m prepared to lose. That way even if my friend “forgets,” I can write it off, forgive him and still remain pals.
