Car Slumber

January 21, 2007 | Category: Reflections & Musings

Guess what. I sleep in my car last night. Well not literally, I was sleeping in there for an hour because I couldn’t get into the house. Someone happily had the latch on and I was unable to get in. I tried calling mum but she assumed it was her alarm and happily cut me off the phone.

Smelling of alcohol and smoke, I decided I should just have a slumber party in my car. Trying the make the best of it, first I tried sleeping at the back but the seats were plain uncomfortable, so I move to the drivers seat and had the back down. I had my legs stretched across the hand-break. Not the most comfortable place in the world so to speak. Unable to have the windows down because mossies were everywhere and knowing me, a tiny mossie bite will keep me awake for a whole night.

Believe me, sleeping alone outside in the car where god knows whatever is lurking out there is not fun. Everytime I tried to close my eyes, it felt like someone was watching down on me. I had goosebumps all over me. I certainly didn’t want to wake up and have some creepy ‘thing’ staring at my face. jesus-fucking-christ. oops.

Laying there, I kept thinking about all my friends who were already home sleeping in the cozy bed and cold air-conditioned room. Boy I was jealous. Fuck my luck. Feeling all discomfort, I woke up and started playing sudoku on my mobile. I felt that keeping awake is better than having all that insecurities. Finally at about 5am, I saw the lights in the living room switched on. I immediately got out of my car and went to the window to check who it was. Mum. Her face all swollen from waking up. She was checking her phone and when she looked up the window, she saw me.

Thank god for mum. I could have given her a big kiss but I was too tired and sleepy to do anything but say thank you. After the night I had, with all the booze and interestingly dirty conversations; I really needed my cushy bed and cold air-conditioned room. I do wonder now how people can actually live in their cars for months if not years. One thing’s for sure, they have my utmost respect because I really don’t think I can.
