The Devil’s Advocate

March 27, 2006 | Category: Reflections & Musings

If you’re a credit card salesperson, you’re not evil. The card itself is evil. It’s the devil telling you to spend spend spend!

A few nights ago I was on my way out, I stopped at the petrol kiosk to fill up my car. As I got out I noticed there was this girl in dark blue collared shirt standing next to the station. She gave me a sweet smile and in my heart I was telling myself “Gee this Chinese girl is friendly. Never in my life had any CHINESE girl smile at me like that. Usually, they’d just preferred to give me a dirty look.” (its the truth) So naturally, I returned her with a smile. All of a sudden…

she was right in front of my face. Immediately, she started babbling away about support her in search for credit card users. I looked at her in awe and said, “What?”. She didn’t even give me a chance to absorb in all she was saying. She was going on and on like a train without breaks. I knew she was trying to entice me to sign up for a credit card.

Then I said, No.

She keeps going on and on.

Again, I said No.

Again, she ignores me and went on and on.

With a slightly raised voice I said, “Did you know that credit cards are EVIL?!”

She stopped and continue, “No, they’re not evil! Come come I introduce you the lady card Got alot of benefits one nah you see you see Plus hor you can choose from these few free gifts and not forgetting hor got 2 years waiver fee on your membership You sign up now lar please Support us la Come I sign you up now Just give me your IC and I can fill up for you very quickly one Do you have another credit card Is it more than one year already I just need to copy the number and then we’re done See see very fast one Come support us la”

Notice how I did not put any full stops? She literally spoke without stopping. *rolls eyes*

OMGOD, like what the fuck?

I replied, “Look, today alone I’ve already had two other banks calling me to sign up for their credit card.”

She cut me, “But our benefits are better We can give you gold card You want Please support us I sign you up for the lady card I promise you waiver free for two years and if you can provide me with more information I can give you more points please la please support us…..bla bla bla..”

I practically had to shut myself of from whatever she was repeating over and over and over. Fuck how to support you when I myself need financial support? And I mean not plastic support. Cash support please.

Bloody hell. These people are so desparate for a customer, they’d go all the way out to a petrol kiosk. I must say though, it’s quite a creative sale idea. Nonetheless, it’s bloody annoying. You can’t force anyone to sign up for anything.

I understand perfectly the concept of sales especially when it comes to credit card sales. Again, they are extremely desparate for customers. Banks all over are in fierce competition trying to get that very customer, only different banks have different offers, promos & benefits; tied in with not so nice gifts and some nauseating tricks up their sleeves.

I really pity these people, they’re only doing their job. But then again, it’s bloody bloody annoying. Chialat. If they don’t reach their target, at the end of the day they will all kena ‘goreng sotong’. If you know what I mean. It’s not easy to get someone to sign up nowadays. Even if you did, you never know if your ‘potential’ customer could be already blacklisted for not paying his 10 other platinum credit cards.

Hence why I try to stay clear away from plastics. Evil. So the evil.

Another financial planning tiP: Always remember that credit cards are not money!

Credit cards are the tool of the devil. From a time when I had a wallet full of credit cards, I’m now down to 2, both of which I do not carry with me. I pay for everything in cash, and only use the cards for when I travel.
