I Love My Malaysia, Quirks & All
August 31, 2005 | Category: Reflections & Musings
I’ve lived in Malaysia all my life, never been overseas, only travelled domestically and all these years I’ve complained again and again that I want to leave. Honestly, I have so little appreciation towards my life in Malaysia. Like many others, I have lamented time and time again of all the bad habits and flaws we Malaysians tend to acquire. Talk about being patriotic. Day in day out, we read in the papers about all the problems and the dissatisfaction people encounter everyday. Be it with the law, or any government agencies or towards each other. Every day we hear people say “This is how Malaysians do things” “This is so typically Malaysian”. Yes, we are all Malaysians and these are our quirkiness.
We love to cut people in queues, not matter how short the queue is. Be it at a cashier queue or in a traffic.
We become inconsiderate when we’re behind the wheels. Honking away and inching our way into spaces like crazy lunatics just because we needed to get somewhere fast.
We take excessively at buffets only to end up leaving the same pile on the table, completely oblivious that other third world countries that suffers from famine.
We love taking advantages of the word ‘free’ and becomes chaotic when it is paired up with the word ‘food’. All hell breaks lose!!
We are always always ‘royally’ late when attending functions.
We try to ‘persuade’ ourselves out of any sticky situation when encountered with the law. Oh, and paying summons at the very very last minute.
We throw tantrums when we don’t get what we want. Believe me, it’ll be all out in the National papers the next day. We just love the drama don’t we?!
We never ever RSVP. Do we even know what it means? Répondez, s’il vous plaît, which simply means “Please respond if you want to come!”
We love not to keep our toilets clean. Doesn’t civic mindedness all begin at home?
Trust me, before you start ‘disagreeing’ with me, I have a point to make and there’s definitely plenty more of where that came from. After 48 years of Independence, Malaysia has come a long way. Fighting for the freedom we all enjoy today, albeit all the flaws and quirkiness Malaysia is still a place to call home to most of us. Despite all the bad habits that we Malaysians love to hate, there’s also the immeasureable.
Quirkiness aside, Malaysia are just simple the most amazing people. We’ve achieved far more than anyone of us can imagine. Even though at times we can be inconsiderate, we all know we have gone out of our ways to help the unfortunate. Deep down inside of us there is a heart.
No matter how royally late we tend to be, Malaysians sure know how to make any party, the most talked about party of the year. With that too we NEVER RSVP! *grins*
Malaysians have also made a brand of themselves in the world of fashion, such as Jimmy Choo, Zang Toi to name a few. They’ve all become the crème de la crème of the fashion industry. How amazing is that? There are so many things we can mention about Malaysians who’ve made something of themselves and the country.
But it’s the little things that we Malaysians do every single day that makes us so Malaysian. We all believe in each other, belief in the government who keeps our country as peaceful as we are today, belief in the religion we are born into and respecting each others religion and belief that we Malaysians are able to go as far as we want our dream to go.
We really should consider ourselves blessed to be Malaysians, having such rich and diversed race and cultures. The vibrant colors of our land, flora and fauna that blooms into a beautiful live picturesque right before our eyes. Not to mention the food, need I say more people?!?!
We are Malaysians. I am Malaysian and I’m really proud to be one.
Selamat Menyambut Hari Kemerdekaan ke-48!!
